Each week, I’ll bring you a rundown of the Brewers’ minor league affiliates, including scoring updates, key players and more. Here is the summary of week nine.
Triple-A Nashville
The Sounds won five of six against the Charlotte Knights (20-30), improving to 27-24 on the season, 7.5 games behind Omaha (33-15) in the International League West.
Brewer Hicklen hit three more home runs this week, hitting .412/.545/1.176 with eight RBI, seven runs, seven hits, four walks, two doubles, a triple and two steals. He has been a strong addition to the lineup this season, hitting .284/.403/.580 with 11 home runs, 36 RBIs and 19 steals in 47 games. Wes Clarke hit two home runs, while Isaac Collins led the team with eight hits and drove in seven. As a team, the Sounds hit .269/.355/.469 with six home runs and 30 runs scored.
DL Hall worked one inning in a rehab start for the Sounds, allowing one walk and striking out one. Chad Patrick had the best start to the week, allowing one run, four hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts in just five innings. As a staff, Sounds pitchers finished the week with a league-best 2.34 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 50 innings.
The Sounds head to Memphis to take on the Redbirds (27-24) for the second time this season. The two teams split a six-game match in mid-April.
Double A Biloxi
The Shuckers had a tough week, as they were outscored by the Barons 41-17 en route to a sweep, falling to 18-27 and last place in the South League.
Brock Wilken was one of the Shuckers’ few bright spots, hitting .320/.370/.640 with two home runs and four RBIs on the week, and also led the team with eight hits. Carlos D. Rodríguez had seven hits, driving in four in his return from injury. Still, the Shuckers hit just .198/.289/.294 with four home runs and 17 runs scored on the week.
Kaleb Bowman was strong in two long relief appearances, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks with five strikeouts in six innings of work. He now has an excellent 0.72 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 25 innings this season. The pitching staff finished the week with a poor 5.46 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 56 innings.
The Shuckers stay home to battle the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (23-22). Biloxi is 1-5 against Pensacola this season.
High-A Wisconsin
The Rattlers ultimately had a losing week, losing four of six to the South Bend Cubs (18-27) to fall to 28-17 on the season, ½ game behind the Cedar Rapids Kernels (28-16).
Jadher Areinamo had a big week, collecting 11 hits – including the team’s only home run – and driving in 10 with five steals and five runs scored for a line of .478/.481/696. Catcher Matthew Wood had seven hits, hitting .318/.348/.364 with one RBI. As a team, Wisconsin hit .208/.304/.264 with one home run and 19 runs scored.
Tate Kuehner had the best start to the week, allowing no runs on two hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in a winning effort. Craig Yoho worked 2 ⅓ scoreless innings in relief, walking two and striking out four. As a staff, the Rattlers had a 5.54 ERA, striking out 53 in 52 innings.
The Rattlers return home to battle the Fort Wayne TinCaps (21-24) for the first time this year.
Carolina single-A
The Mudcats moved back into a tie for first place in the North Carolina League, splitting six games with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (19-25) to move to 26-17 on the season.
Luis Castillo led the offense with three home runs this week, while prospects Juan Báez, Yophery Rodríguez and Cooper Pratt tied for the team lead with eight hits each. Both Báez and Rodríguez also hit home runs and drove in five runs. As a team, the Mudcats hit just .267/.368/.383 with five home runs and 39 runs scored.
Yorman Galíndez got off to another strong start, allowing one run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in 4 ⅔ innings. Aidan Maldonado and Jeferson Figueroa combined for 6 ⅓ scoreless innings in relief, striking out 13 batters and each earning a win. As a pitching staff, the Mudcats had a 5.50 ERA, striking out 67 batters in 54 innings.
The Mudcats remain at home to battle the bottom-ranked Delmarva Shorebirds (15-29) for the first time this year.
