Ryan Timms moved up the field from last to second after going to the back of the field following a lap 13 caution to lead Toyota in the 40-lap USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series Sweet Springs Motorsports Complex feature , on Sunday. It was Timms’ second consecutive runner-up finish after placing second at Belleville on Saturday.
The race came to a heartbreaking end for Timms’ Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate Kale Drake, who led 34 laps before jumping into turn two on the restart while leading with just two laps remaining. He finally stopped on top of the cushion. He would finally come in 15th place.
Drake wasn’t the only Toyota to miss his chance at victory late, as Daison Pursley, Saturday night’s winner at Belleville, was battling Drake for the lead when he appeared to suffer a shock problem at the turn two on lap 38, causing a spin that resulted in the final caution of the night. He would immediately get out of the car unharmed.
Drake and Pursley had battled for the lead for much of the race and had exchanged the lead just before the yellow when Pursley had passed Drake to lead 37, only to see Drake come back on the next lap.
Logan Seavey would be the beneficiary of the two leaders suffering late problems, as he would take the win ahead of Timms, with the Toyota-powered drivers capturing four of the top five finishing positions. Jacob Denney would take third, followed by Zach Daum in fourth and Cannon McIntosh in fifth. It was McIntosh’s third consecutive top-five finish to open the season.
The USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series returns to the track for the six-race Indiana Midget Week, which begins June 4 at Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis.
Toyota Quotes:
Ryan Timms, Keith Kunz Motorsports: “It was a very tight race at the beginning and after starting 11th, I tried a bomb and a couple of guys stopped in front of me and I ended up having to go to the back of the field. I started passing cars and found the quickest line to do it. My car was really good. After the misfortune with Kale and Daison, we were able to come home in second place. “I am very excited to return after being at the back of the field.”
