Yahoo Sports national columnist Dan Wetzel, senior college football reporter Ross Dellenger and Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde discuss Dan Hurley’s decision to reject the Lakers’ head coaching offer and remain at UConn.
Video transcript
Dan Hurley rejects the Los Angeles Lakers to return to the University of Connecticut and presents an opportunity to achieve a historic third title.
He will continue his legacy in college basketball.
Great day for uconn.
Is it a great day for college basketball?
Also?
Pat, yeah, I mean, Dan Hurley is the king of this sport now.
It is at a historical high point that very few have reached and has the opportunity to continue contributing to it.
I mean, they should start the 2024 season 25th in the top five and have a chance to achieve a third place finish that hasn’t been achieved since John Wooden.
And I just think he fits better psychologically geographically where he is at Uconn and in the college game, rather than being in Los Angeles with the NBA and the Lakers, Ross.
What does this mean for college sports that not only is uconn coming back but that uconn is not in a powerful, deep-pocketed football league?
What does this say about the ability to compete?
He clearly sees in the big East and a school, unquote, great college football in these great times, college football money because that’s been a concern.
The dividing line.
Dan Hurley seems to see no dividing line.
Yeah, I mean, we’ve heard for months, if not years, nothing and all these changes happen in college athletics and there are, you know, free transfers and you hear complaints from a lot of coaches. about the college athletic recruiting calendar and, uh, how to protect college sports and all these coaches are going to the NFL and the NBA and they don’t want to be in college and boom, here you go.
You have, you have a guy who conveys possibly one of the, without a doubt, possibly the best job in basketball.
Um, uh, no, not just the money, right, which was, which was supposedly $70 million over six years.
But, um, coaching in the NBA and coaching a historic franchise in the NBA and coaching, maybe the greatest player to ever play the sport, um, it’s pretty, pretty incredible.
Um, and it probably says something about, um, uh, you know, the college athletics landscape in general.
Um, maybe, maybe, you know, some people in the sport see it as a better option than coaching professional players.
And I think we need to keep 11 things in mind here, especially and Pat mentioned it, Dan Dan Hurley as a coach.
Good.
He’s probably best suited coaching college players.
Uh, I think there are certain coaches like that and, and he, it’s pretty clear that he fits the college game a little better than the professional game.
Dan Hurley.
Does not go anywhere.
Great day for uconn.
