It’s a moment that’s been 16 years in the making. But when will Boston hold a parade for the Celtics’ 2024 NBA Championship?
When the buzzer sounded on Monday’s blowout victory over the Dallas Mavericks, that hadn’t yet been announced: No one wanted to ruin the team’s quest for an 18th title.
“Okay, we don’t use the ‘P-word’ early in Boston,” Mayor Michelle Wu said last week before Game 4. “But if there’s something big to celebrate, we’ll be prepared and make announcements in the next few years.” days, just to make sure that we are carefully planning and planning all the logistics.”
We asked Wu about Game 5 on Monday morning and here’s what he told us.
“Today is going to be crazy. The entire city is prepared, we are with them and we feel good,” said the mayor about the game.
Tito Horford, father of Celtics center Al Horford, is among the fans cheering on the Celtics in their chance to win the championship on Monday.
We also asked about the next heat wave and how it would influence the celebrations, and he said there were meetings on Monday morning at City Hall, “to talk about what the projections are and what the forecasts are, whether it’s likely to be above certain heat index threshold for several days at a time.
Later on Monday, Wu’s office declared a heat emergency in Boston, activating cooling centers and other measures to keep the population cool.
“It’s also the last week of school in Boston Public Schools, so there are some half days, and we’re thinking about how that affects students who might also need a full day of support,” Wu said. “So we’ll probably have more to come on that front very soon.”
