Whether you agree or not, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown proved to be the best star duo in basketball this season after leading the Boston Celtics to the franchise’s 18th NBA championship.
While times have changed since then, there was once another dynamic duo running the league in the Bay Area when Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and the Warriors made five consecutive NBA Finals appearances and won four titles during their dynastic run together .
Despite Golden State’s success on the court, former NBA guard Evan Turner explained to former Warriors forward and NBA champion Andre Iguodala on his “Point Forward” podcast why he thinks Curry and Thompson fell short. capitalize on that success at that time, and why its failure. doing so presented those opportunities to other young stars.
“The best of the best is yet to come,” Turner said. “These kids are 16 years old and they’re jumping out of the gym, doing all this crazy stuff. If you look at Jayson and Jaylen, it’s like s**t, are you going to find me two better ones than that one right now? And like they won a championship and they’re in 10, They might as well make an R&B album! They’ll be incredibly rich if they win!
“Imagine if Klay and Steph weren’t so corny, bro. They had the world under control. Those little kids were on fire. It’s dangerous.”
Curry is a 10-time NBA All-Star, two-time scoring champion, two-time NBA MVP and Finals MVP. His teammate Splash Bro has made five NBA All-Star Game appearances and has been named to the All-NBA Third Team twice.
Their three-point shooting changed the game of basketball, but Turner believes they should have taken advantage of off-court marketing opportunities.
Iguodala argued that the same could be said for Tatum regarding the “cheesy” label, although he clarified that he doesn’t think the Celtics forward is corny, but that’s just the perception across the league. Turner later walked back his words and emphasized that Curry and the Warriors could have made better use of the moment during a historic dynasty.
“I’m not calling Steph and they (are) cheesy, I’m just saying that during the era of marketing and how you could represent an athlete, there were two beige guys,” Turner said. “They should have had the world. Steph Curry’s shoes should be Jordans, dog. That’s all I’m saying.”
Iguodala said he wouldn’t necessarily put that on Curry, Turner made one last marketing comment.
“From a marketing standpoint,” Turner continued. “You all were, by far, one of the best teams of all time. The best team of all time! And you had the best shooters of all time. The worst thing that happened to you was Mark Jackson was fired because there goes the marketing speech”.
While it would be safe to say that Curry and Thompson probably won’t be releasing an R&B album anytime soon, the two have found a lot of success and happiness outside of basketball.
And if being a four-time NBA champion is the new thing, sign us all up.
