Tobias Myers had a rough start to his major league career.
Debuting on April 23 against the Pirates, Myers had a decent first game (one run allowed in five innings), but returned with consecutive starts of four earned runs allowed, raising his ERA to 6.23 in three games.
Since then, he has made seven appearances (six starts, one relief), progressively reducing his FIP from 7.62 to 4.66 and his ERA from 6.23 to 3.26. He has been especially impressive since allowing five runs in 4 1⁄3 innings on May 31, spanning 20 1⁄3 innings in three June starts and allowing just one run on eight hits and six walks with 15 strikeouts, reducing his FIP from 5.78 to 4.66. and his ERA from 5.40 to 3.26.
His last outing came Tuesday night in a win over the Angels, where he went 6 1⁄3 scoreless innings, tying his career high with six strikeouts and allowing just four hits and a pair of walks.
Looking at Baseball Savant’s MLB percentile rankings for Myers, it’s clear that his numbers and stuff aren’t the flashiest. Still, he has kept the Brewers in games, winning each of his last four decisions and helping the Brewers win in six of his last seven appearances (the only loss being a 2-1 game against the Red Sox). ).
Tobias Myers Baseball Savant Rating
His only above-average pitches in terms of vertical movement are his cutter and four-seam fastball, which bodes well for him considering he uses those pitches a combined 65% of the time. In 91 plate appearances that ended in his four-seamer, opposing hitters are hitting just .175 with a slugging percentage of .400, although those numbers are well below xBA and xSLG at .242 and .513, respectively.

As mentioned above, he only allowed eight hits in that span, six of which were singles. He has allowed just two extra-base hits in that time, a double to Nolan Schanuel and a solo home run to Davis Schneider, which represents the only run he has allowed this month. He also allowed only three barrels in that time.

Myers’ at-bat records since June 1
If there’s a lesson to be learned here, it’s that Tobias Myers has been very lucky in his last few appearances, but he also seems to be adjusting as the season progresses. He’s done a great job avoiding hard contact, and his inning-eating ability has been valuable for a Brewers pitching staff that has dealt with a slew of injuries all season. Only time will tell if he’s figuring things out or if the last few games are a fluke.
