Mississippi State basketball coach Chris Jans is being rewarded for leading the Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA tournaments.
Jans and Mississippi State have agreed to a contract extension, the program announced Monday. The extension is for four seasons, which is the maximum amount for a state employee in Mississippi.

The deal includes an expected salary increase to $4.2 million per season, up from $3.2 million per season last season, a source told the Clarion Ledger. Jans earned $2.4 million a year in his first season at the helm before signing his first contract extension with the school ahead of the 2023-24 season.
“We are excited for the future of Mississippi State basketball under the leadership of Coach Jans,” Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon said in a news release. “He and his staff have done a tremendous job since arriving in Starkville and we know the best is yet to come.
“Boosted by seven sellouts, Bulldog fans made Humphrey Coliseum one of the most electrifying atmospheres in college basketball last season, and we can’t wait to see what next year has in store. Pack up The Hump!”
Jans has a 42-27 record with the Bulldogs and, since his tenure at New Mexico State, has reached the NCAA Tournament five times in the last six March Madness seasons.

The salary increase is up from $3.2 million annually last season and $2.4 million in his first season with the Bulldogs. According to Keynote USA’s men’s basketball contracts database, he ties him as the 13th highest-paid coach in college basketball alongside Indiana’s Mike Woodson.
