Caitlin Clark’s impact on the WNBA is no different than Tiger Woods’ impact on professional golf more than 20 years ago. These charismatic, generational talents attracted new fans and elevated their professions. Any complaints about the attention Clark receives ignores what Tiger enjoyed and is misplaced.

In a letter you printed, the writer complained about the Sparks raising the price of the cheap seats section from $20 to $125 for the game against Indiana. You may not know that Indiana selected Caitlin Clark first in the recent WNBA Draft. Clark has brought enormous visibility to women’s basketball. The women’s final of March Madness surpassed the men’s final by millions of television followers. The New York Liberty vs. Indiana of the WNBA last week became the first women’s game to reach $2 million in ticket sales. The letter writer called Sparks’ increase in ticket prices “socialism.” I call it capitalism. I suspect you can take her daughter to any other Sparks home game and find the price of cheap seats to her liking.

LeBron is indeed a ‘real’ Laker
One letter writer last week felt that LeBron is not a true Laker. Whoever wears the purple and gold on the court at any time in franchise history IS A LAKER.
The late Kobe Bryant even welcomed LeBron into the family right after signing. Talk about a resounding endorsement.
This sounds like something bitter coming from a fan who is upset that the Lakers are out this year. People want to blame LeBron, but it takes a team to win in the NBA, not just one player. Should we decrease the value of the Lakers’ most recent title because of this fake Laker on the roster for the 2019-20 champions?
Isn’t Michael Jordan a “real” Washington Wizard? He clearly meant something to that franchise, and it meant something to him. How is it possible that an NBA player is not a “true” member of an association team?

The Pacers will win it all because this team shares the ball and trusts each other. Unlike the Lakers, who play basketball between two men. The other players can’t get into a rhythm because LeBron or AD monopolize the ball. As long as the Lakers keep LeBron, the losing formula will persist and lead to more of the same.

At least one benefit
Although it’s a long shot, with JJ Redick as coach, the Lakers’ three-point shooting should improve.

October foreshadowing?
When Dave Roberts said there was a playoff atmosphere in San Diego last weekend, he was sure he was right. For the most part, the offense resembled the offense of the last two years in the playoffs. No energy, shaking your head, after weak outs and complete disregard for fundamentals like moving runners and batting to the opposite field when pitched out.
Roberts, unless the team isn’t performing the right way now, will be another disappointing playoff failure.

Get out of here
Just when we thought the over-the-top “bat flip” was the height of arrogant spectacle, that insipid twist-and-swipe, arms raised in blatant self-aggrandizement, by all Dodger hitters after every hit, regardless of the score, it is a short link and proves Freud’s thesis: the ego is nothing more than the focus of conscious attention.
Or, in the immortal words of Vin Scully, “Good is no good when you expect better.” Apparently, money can buy an elite designated hitter and a starting pitcher or two, but it can’t buy you class.

It takes more than desire, Rob.
That’s why Rob Blake believes the key to winning the Stanley Cup is simply believing that “what we’ve realized is that there’s a certain desire to win that has to emerge within our team here.” Sorry Rob, you of all people should know that size matters in playoff hockey. Just look at the Kings teams from 2012 and 2014. The Kings are too small. Expecting the little engine that could mentality isn’t going to cut it.

Then we found out last week that USC paid Lincoln Riley $19 million in his first season in Troy. I wondered how much more boosters would pay if Lincoln also coached defense.
