Adam Fox had no time or interest in talking about his health before Game 1 of this conference finals, when he dismissed a question to that effect as if it were the sweat of his brow.
“Good,” he said Tuesday. “Ready to go tomorrow.”
Except tomorrow came and went, and Fox worked through 24:56 of ice time without looking like himself, and was on the ice for a pair of five-on-five goals.

Whether or not Fox is still feeling the effects of a knee-to-knee collision with Nick Jensen in the first round is a question that no one should expect a real answer to until after the season.
But it sure stands out that Wednesday’s 3-0 loss to the Panthers marked Fox’s fifth straight game without a point, its longest pointless streak since having six in a row to close the 2020-21 regular season.
Fox has only four other streaks without a point that are five or more games in his career, one of which was the first seven games he played in the NHL.
At this point, this issue isn’t just limited to the Rangers’ number 23.
Their defensive corps has combined for just two goals in the playoffs. But Fox is the one who’s supposed to lead the charge. He knows.

“I think we want to produce, obviously,” Fox said Thursday. “Some more than others, myself included, are expected to produce a little more offense. I think our main goal as a D-corps is to defend first, especially against high-octane teams, and not really force that offense.
“Getting up in a hurry, coming together late and delivering pucks from the blue line, maybe getting rebounds like that. “I think we definitely want to make the jump when the opportunity presents itself.”
He rarely did in Game 1, when carrying the puck proved to be a widespread problem for the Rangers.
“I think, especially on the first two series, (the defenders) were trying to move, trying to get involved,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “The game-winning goal (in Game 6 against Carolina) where (Ryan Lindgren) goes around the net, the move and the move. Definitely finding more pucks to the net, lanes to the net on the backside of the run, that type of thing. I think that can help his production.”
When asked if Filip Chytil was okay after taking a hit from Nikko Mikkola in the final seconds of Game 1, Laviolette simply said, “We have nothing to report at this time” regarding the lineup.
“Would I like a little more physique? Sure,” she said. “As far as what we do, we have to focus on the game and play the game.
