Late spring and summer in Myrtle Beach mean it’s time to aerate the greens at area golf courses.
Therefore, layouts will be closed for up to a week to promote healthy conditions, particularly on the greens.
Aerating is the process of poking holes in the lawn.
The aeration process helps relieve compaction caused by heavy traffic on the lawn, controls the buildup of thatch (old plant material that accumulates on the soil surface), and promotes grass root health by allowing air to pass through. , water and nutrients reach them more easily.
Covering with sand after an aeration fills the holes to help the green surface remain relatively flat and smooth as the lawn is repaired.
To find fields that are in the best condition this summer, here is the Grand Strand aeration closure schedule for the remainder of 2024:

HGTC introduces GKeynoteUSA program
Area superintendents who will be responsible for aeration in the future could come from Horry-Georgetown Technical College.
HGTC has recently partnered with the United States Golf Association to establish the Greenkeeper Apprenticeship Program (GKeynoteUSA) in the Myrtle Beach area.
The initiative aims to provide a sustainable flow of professionals trained in golf course maintenance, and many from HGTC will remain in the Grand Strand after graduation.
The GKeynoteUSA has been successfully piloted at Sandhills Community College in the Pinehurst, North Carolina, area for the past two years. It provides a hybrid education with schooling and practical training in course maintenance.
A commitment of $1 million over five years from the USGA and donors will allow HGTC to offer free apprenticeships for one year and paid on-the-job training positions at partner golf courses.
