Caddy-turned-analyst Michael Collins claims he was fired by former US Open and PGA Tour star Daniel Chopra after tensions nearly left them fighting on the course many moons ago.
It was on a golf course in Chicago where Danny Chops and Collins chose some words for each other, and the verbal altercation resulted in the caddy dropping his bags and asking the Swede if he wanted to “leave.” Speaking with Dan Katz and PMT commentator on the Pardon My Take podcast, Collins reflected on the “volatile” world of caddying.
He said: “People thought, ‘Oh, cool, you’re a caddy, so you’re guaranteed this and’. No, man, it doesn’t work like that. I got fired on a Thursday after the first round; there are no contracts. There are no guarantees. for the caddies and you have to pay all your own expenses: plane tickets, hotel, car rental, food, all that.
“So if you’ve got a guy missing four or five cuts in a row and you’ve got a family at home and bills to pay, it can be a little scary.” Katz then probed Collins about why he was fired that aforementioned afternoon, prompting him to burst into laughter before making his claims about his fallout with Chopra.
He added: “I was working for a guy; he and I almost got into a fight on the golf course. I literally put my bag down and said, ‘Do you want to go?’ while I caddied. Let’s just say that of all the people I’ve caddied for, we’re all friends now, but at the time, what seemed like a good connection ended horribly.
“I caddied for Daniel Chopra for about three months maybe, and at one point we just didn’t get along, so bad that I left my bag in the middle of the tournament and said, ‘Do you want to go right here, in front of everyone?’ Do I have to embarrass you in front of all these people?

“When the worst moment ever came (we were in Chicago and he shot six overs and he was in the locker room), he sent his wife, Samantha, because he didn’t want to do it face to face. Maybe even scared. And she said, ‘ We’re going to make a change,’ and I was like, ‘yeah, that’s probably a good idea.'”
Since retiring from his ten-year career as a caddy, Collins joined the KeynoteUSA golf team, working as a host and analyst on a variety of the network’s golf shows. Chopra, who went T24 at the US Open in 2004, would capture his first PGA victory at the Ginn sur Mer Classic at Tesoro in 2007, before capturing a second at the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Championship.
The US Open begins Thursday (June 13) at No. 2 Pinehurst in North Carolina.
