Spending the weekend at a major golf tournament is always a big deal. That’s an even greater achievement at the US Open.
The national championship, held this week at Pinehurst No. 2, typically has the second-smallest final field of the four men’s majors. The Masters chooses the 50 best players and ties; The US Open advances among the top 60 players and ties.
It will mean a lot of jostling in midfield on Friday, where a hit or two here or there could decide the fate of not just one player, but perhaps a dozen or more.
Here’s a look at what you need to know about Friday’s cut line at the US Open.

What is the projected US Open cut line?
At the end of Thursday’s first round, 64 players were 2 over or better. At 4:45 p.m., halfway through the second round, 5 over is again projected to be the cutoff line for the 2024 US Open.
That score could change again depending on how things develop; Before it was 4 plus, but the scores have changed again.
Will Tiger Woods make the US Open cut?
Tiger Woods is about to make the cut at the US Open for the first time since 2019.
At 6 over through 12 holes of his second round, Woods is currently one shot away from the projected cut.
Who is expected to miss the US Open cut?
The biggest name on the chopping line now is world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. This year’s Masters Tournament champion had major problems Friday with his putter, and a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 5th hole was part of a 74 that leaves him at 5-over 145 for the tournament.
I would need several players to fight down the stretch today to get the cut to 5 overs and play on the weekend. Scheffler hasn’t missed a cut since the 2022 St. Jude Championship, almost two years ago.
After Thursday’s first round, here are some of the notable names who will need big improvements on Friday to stay through the weekend.
- Tiger Forest +4
- Dustin Johnson +5
- Will Zalatoris +5
- Justin Tomas +7
- Victor Hovland +8
- Phil Mickelson +9
How many players make the US Open cut?
At the US Open, the top 60 players and ties advance to play the final two rounds of the tournament.
There is no longer a rule requiring players within 10 strokes of the lead to qualify for the weekend. That rule ended after the 2011 tournament.
