Cameron Young became the 12th different player to post a score under 60 on the PGA Tour on Saturday at the Travelers Championship.
Young destroyed TPC River Highlands with an 11-under 59, a score that tied Young for the lead with Tom Kim, although Kim was still about 20 minutes away from teeing off when Young concluded play.
“I woke up, I would have preferred to go back to sleep,” Young said. “…I didn’t feel particularly great. I did a little less on the range than I did yesterday. Then, yeah, I went out there and felt really comfortable and things started getting closer to the hole.”
After teeing off in Group 11 on Saturday, and 4 hours and 15 minutes before Kim’s final pairing, Young birdied three of his first four holes. The hole he didn’t birdie during that stretch? He did it eagle, holing a driving wedge from 142 yards on the par-4 third.
Young added a second eagle, on the manageable par-4 15th, where he drove it 280 yards with a 3-iron to 4 feet and made the putt.
“I’ve hit that club everywhere and finally hit it square,” Young said. “I think I said something to the effect of, just give me all the right rebounds. So it was. I mean, where that would end up would be a great shot from the front of the green. So it’s, you know, a really good swing and a great shot, but it’s not likely to end up somewhere where you can basically take advantage of it for 2.
“You could make the same shot a hundred more times and you’d get two on that plateau here.”
Young’s 59 is the Tour’s first sub-60 score since Scottie Scheffler scored a 59 in the 2020 Northern Trust at TPC Boston, and 13th overall. It’s also one step away from the Travelers record of 58, recorded by Jim Furyk in 2016.
Furyk is the only player to have two scores under 60 on Tour, having also posted a 59 at the 2013 BMW Championship at Conway Farms.
When it comes to Young’s professional achievements, his 59 doesn’t top the list, says Young, who is winless on Tour but owns seven career runner-up finishes, including a solo second-place finish at the 2022 Open Championship in St .Andrews.
“I played some really good golf,” Young said. “I think in terms of accomplishments in my life, there are definitely some things that precede me. It’s a day, it’s a day when you shot a million less. It’s great and I’m grateful my name is on that short list, but there are entire tournaments I’ve played that I would probably still put above them.”
