Bryson DeChambeau is the beneficiary of a series of advantages after putting his foot down Rory McIlroy‘s heart to claim the 2024 US Open.
Firstly, the 30-year-old American has solved the world ranking enigma.
DeChambeau does not earn OWGR points as he plays in LIV Golf events and was therefore facing the possibility of being banned from the majors entirely after his exemption for winning the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot expired.
Now he no longer has those worries and has even jumped to tenth place in the standings.
On the other hand, DeChambeau took home a huge amount of prize money for his heroics at Pinehurst No.2.
But the box-office golfer has not qualified for this summer’s Olympics.
The US Open was the final qualifying event for the men’s Olympic tournament and he was already well behind fellow Americans Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa.
All four players will play at Le Golf National in Paris later this summer.
DeChambeau is now enjoying something of a media victory and joined the Pat McAfee Show to talk about his latest triumph.
When asked about the Olympics, DeChambeau said, “I’m playing great golf, I’m excited, but ultimately, yeah, am I frustrated and disappointed? Sure, you could absolutely say that.”
That said, DeChambeau emphasized, “But I made the decisions I made and that has consequences and I respect that.”
It looked like DeChambeau would represent Team USA at the delayed Tokyo Games, but he contracted Covid and was replaced by Patrick Reed.
At the time he caused a certain stir for his comments about getting vaccinated.
“The vaccine doesn’t necessarily prevent this from happening,” he told reporters in Memphis ahead of the 2021 FedEx St. Jude Invitational on the PGA Tour.
“I am young enough, I prefer to give it (the vaccine) to people who need it. I don’t need it. I am a young and healthy person who will continue to work on my health.
“I don’t think taking the vaccine away from someone who needs it is a good thing. My dad is a perfect example. He got it (the vaccine) early because he’s diabetic. People like that need to get it. My mom got it. I don’t want to take away that ability.” .
His comments were seen as puzzling, to say the least.
The aforementioned Schauffele won gold at the 2020 Olympic Games.
DeChambeau will return to the golf course later this week for LIV Golf’s ninth event of its 2024 campaign in Nashville.
