Golf
For the first time, Florida State men’s golf reached the final stage of the NCAA Championship, defeating Georgia Tech and North Carolina to advance to the NCAA Match Play Championship:
Senior Frederik Kjettrup’s winning putt on the 17th hole of the ACC semifinal against tournament singles champion Hiroshi Tai sealed FSU’s ticket to the National Championship, its first appearance in program history. Before this year’s championship, the Seminoles appeared in the semifinals twice in 2010 and 2023, but failed to reach the title match.
Kjettrup won his match against Georgia Tech 3&1, completing an impressive round.
Freshman Tyler Weaver stepped up strongly, going 2-0 on the day with the decisive putt of the NCAA quarterfinals against UNC and knocking off Georgia Tech’s Kale Fontenot on the 19th hole. Weaver’s victory tied the match at 2-2 and set the stage for Kjettrup’s winning putt against the Yellow Jackets.
Sophomore sensation Luke Clanton came back twice Tuesday to defeat his opponents from UNC and Georgia Tech. He finished Christo Lamprecht, 2 and 1, after winning each of his final four holes to give FSU a tremendous impulse.
Weaver secured FSU’s second straight trip to the NCAA Match Play semifinals after par-putting the No. 7 hole to defeat UNC’s David Ford, 3 and 2.
Clanton scored a big win over Austin Greaser after being three holes down with nine holes to play. He turned things around to earn a 2&1 victory, FSU’s second confirmed victory in the game.
Brett Roberts also had a nice win, putting FSU’s initial point on the board when he defeated UNC’s Peter Fountain, 2 and 1. The Seminoles’ 3-1 victory avenged their loss to the Tar Heels in the game for the ACC championship a month earlier.
The Seminoles will face the Auburn Tigers for a national title, with the competition beginning at 5:25 p.m. ET; For those with Golf Channel, coverage begins there starting at 6 p.m. ET. from the Omni La Costa North course in Carlsbad, California.

Florida State softball freshman Jaysoni Beachum on Tuesday became the first Florida State Seminole to win the TUCCI/NFCA Division I Freshman of the Year award:
Beachum was a unanimous selection and became the first ACC player in league history to win the award.
The Tallahassee native put together the best freshman season in Florida State history and made it all over the Florida State record books in her first season as a Seminole. Beachum broke freshman records for batting average, runs batted in and on-base percentage. His 16 home runs were the second-most home runs by a freshman and tied for sixth-most ever by a Florida State player. Beachum drove in 66 runs, which was a new record for FSU freshmen and was the fifth-most by a Seminole. The ACC Freshman of the Year was one of three players in school history to hit 15 or more home runs and record 60 or more RBIs.
Beachum finished the season with a .417 average, which is the third-highest single-season average in Florida state history. He also ranked in the top 10 in a single season in slugging percentage, as his .743 slugging percentage ranks eighth in FSU history.
Beachum led the Seminoles’ explosive offense this season by leading the Noles in batting average, hits, home runs, runs batted in, total bases and on-base percentage and was second on the team in OPS, runs scored, slugging percentage and bases by balls.
Known for her offense, Beachum also continued Florida State’s tradition of having great defensive play at the hot corners. Beachum started 61 games at third base for the Seminoles and committed just five errors in 164 attempts.
Beachum was a First Team All-ACC honoree and was just the third true freshman in school history to be named First Team All-Region. Today she was named First Team All-American by D1Softball, Second Team All-American by Softball America and was Softball America’s Freshman of the Year.
