BALTIMORE, Maryland (July 3, 2024) — Morgan State University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dena Freeman-Patton has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Series (FCS) Oversight Committee. In this prestigious position, Freeman-Patton will serve a four-year term, which will expire on June 30, 2028.
Freeman-Patton, who is entering her junior year at Morgan State, joins a team of administrators charged with enhancing the development of FCS football with a focus on prioritizing a well-rounded student-athlete experience, student-athlete personal growth and leadership development.
The Football Oversight Committee will make recommendations related to the regular season and postseason, enhance the educational experience of student-athletes and promote the personal growth and leadership development of student-athletes, and work in conjunction with appropriate governance entities to provide solutions to issues affecting the health and safety of football student-athletes.
Freeman-Patton expressed her enthusiasm for the appointment, saying: ““I am excited to have been appointed to the FCS Oversight Committee and look forward to advancing the sport of football.”
The Football Oversight Committee oversees licensing procedures for postseason play and qualification and/or selection procedures for the FCS Championship. The committee reviews recommendations from the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee and processes other matters related to the administration of the FCS Championship.
The committee will assume many of the functions of the former NCAA Division I Football Affairs Committee and will provide guidance to the NCAA Football Rules Committee regarding the playing rules governing FBS and FCS football. The Football Oversight Committee is comprised of representatives from each divisional subgroup that sponsors football.
As a member of the Oversight Committee, Freeman-Patton will have an important voice in shaping the future of FCS football. His appointment is not only a personal honor, but also a reflection of Morgan State University’s commitment to excellence in intercollegiate athletics.
