On any other afternoon of any other tournament, Adam Hadwin’s seventh hole would have featured the most surreal scenes of the day. However, during the second round of the PGA Championship, it was just another hole.
After losing his club in the waters of Kentucky’s Valhalla Golf Club on Friday, the Canadian golfer stood still as an enthusiastic fan rushed to return it to him.
As an incredulous but entertained audience of players, caddies and staff watched, broadcast footage showed the spectator stripping down to his underwear and socks before paddling the short distance to retrieve the club.
Coming out of the lake to applause and a hand from the club owner, the fan was quickly rewarded with a towel to dry off before continuing the game. However, there was no happy ending to the hole for Hadwin, who bogeyed the par five.
That didn’t stop his wife Jessica from making light of the events involving her husband.
Responding to a fan’s video of the incident on X, he compared the strange scenes to the “quiet, kid-free weekend” he had anticipated in Louisville.
A 1-over-par 72 was enough to put Hadwin through the weekend at 2-under overall, 10 shots behind leader Xander Schauffele.
It’s still unclear how exactly the club ended up on the lake, but the one-time PGA Tour winner already has.
At The Players Championship in March, the 36-year-old expressed his frustration at finding water for the first time in his career in “the fifth major” by throwing his 8-iron into the drink.
Hadwin also has a reputation for finding himself in strange situations. At last year’s Canadian Open, the world No. 51 was mistakenly knocked down by a security guard while celebrating his friend Nick Taylor’s victory.
However, not even he will have experienced a situation like the one World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler experienced on Friday, with the tournament favorite arrested, charged with serious assault and released from jail before taking the tee.
Scheffler received a rapturous reception before returning to the clubhouse with a stellar 66, capping a surreal day in which some fans donned T-shirts printed with their own mugshot, one taken at the jail where he had warmed up that morning.

Scheffler walks past fans during the second round.
“The fans were tremendous today. I felt like they were cheering me on really hard,” Scheffler told reporters.
“I’ve stayed in the tournament now with a pretty chaotic day,” he added. “So I’m going to go from here and focus on getting some rest and recovery and getting ready to work the last two days.”
Once again, Hadwin’s wife Jessica was on hand to lighten the mood, drawing comparisons between Scheffler and her husband’s travails.
“There is only one logical next step after this latest incident,” he wrote in X.
“Have you been wrongfully arrested and/or approached while working as a professional golfer? He may be entitled to compensation.”
