Billy Horschel is not only celebrating his first top-10 finish at a major since 2013 this week, following his strong performance at the PGA Championship. The eight-time PGA Tour winner and his family are also celebrating his wife Brittany’s sobriety.
During his prep work ahead of this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas, Horschel took to social media to share some photos of Brittany, as well as a video of himself talking about his wife being eight years sober.
“Today is a special day in the Horschel house. It’s May 21 and it’s the date of Brittany’s eighth year of sobriety,” Horschel said. “It’s really amazing to see what her life has become, how she has changed as a person, how she has become an incredible mother and an incredible support system for me.”
After congratulating his wife on her milestone, Horschel made it a point to address anyone else watching the video who may be struggling with addiction right now.
“I know there are a lot of people struggling with addiction and you can’t see the light in the tunnel.”
“You don’t think you can be sober, you don’t think there is anyone who can care for you or love you enough to help you on the journey, but there are. There are people out there. So if you are struggling with any type of addiction, please contact people because people want to help.
“Like I said, if you’re struggling please reach out to people because your life will change, I promise you,” he continued. “This will change if you really want to be sober, you will live the life you have always wanted, so you will have the best. Take care of yourself. I love you all.”
After his victory at the 2017 AT&T Byron Nelson, Horschel spoke vaguely about issues off the golf course, prompting Brittany to share a post the next day about his battle with alcoholism.
“I write this with nervousness, skepticism, but also with pride because I have embraced the woman I have become over the past year,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “A year ago, I began a journey toward a healthy life, mentally and physically. I’ll keep it simple: ‘I’m an alcoholic.’ I say it now without shame.”
Brittany shared her post on May 22, 2017, the day after turning one year sober.
Horschel has had an unforgettable season on the PGA Tour this year, winning the Corales Puntacana Championship in April along with three other top-10 finishes, including a T-8 finish at last week’s PGA Championship.
