The Washington Capitals are one of 32 teams in the NHL, but if you go by the information provided on a jersey the league sells at its New York City store, you might believe otherwise.
Hope, a New York Rangers fan, discovered the error when she visited the location on Monday to purchase new equipment, including some jerseys, a T-shirt and a cap. However, as she approached the checkout line, one shirt in particular caught her attention.
“I thought the Statue of Liberty design was cool, so I picked it up to look at it,” Hope told RMNB in an interview. “Immediately something seemed strange to me.”
Hope counted all the logos and realized one was missing. “It was the capitals,” she said.
Not believing what she saw, Hope counted all the logos three different times. “I had my friend who was with me also check in case he was driving me crazy.”
And she was right. Take a look at this photo with number labels and combine it with a useful and excellent RMNB key below.

The jersey had a Mitchell & Ness tag, an older brand purchased by Fanatics in 2022. After a quick online search, the jersey was not available in the league’s online store, suggesting it was exclusive to the location. from New York.
“I didn’t end up buying it because the equipment was missing,” Hope said with a laugh, “but I couldn’t stop posting about it because I thought it was fun.”
Hope’s viral tweet said, unfortunately according to this jersey from the nhl store in new york…the washington capitals no longer exist. sorry to her fans for this heartbreaking news 💔
Just over a day later, Hope’s post had been viewed more than 102,000 times according to X analytics, generating nearly 100 retweets, 1,4,000 favorites, and 60 replies.
Another NHL team is also fighting an accidental NHL contraction.
