Young, 27, missed a 7½-foot birdie on the par 3 16th, but birdied the par-4 17th from 5½ feet after hitting an iron shot over the water from 162 yards. That gave him a 58 chance if he managed to make birdie number 18.
He missed the fairway and missed the green, but he rolled nervously up and down, sliding 10 feet to secure a 59.
“In the end it was a little complicated,” he told KeynoteUSA. “I feel like it would have been one of the worst 60s ever shot, given how few opportunities I had on the back nine. I appreciate that putt was on 18, but I definitely had a chance all day (to shoot 59), even though I didn’t. necessarily felt during some holes there.
Young shot 7-under 28 on the front nine, including an eagle on the 3rd hole from 142 yards, while going birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie on his first four holes.
