Wherever the Mets go, chaos tends to follow.
Last week was no different as the Phillies saw their NL East rival in back-to-back two-game series. The Phillies won 3 of 4 and there were minimal dull moments during the four-day span.
So in the latest weekly Phillies recap, we take a look at the Mets as… well, the Mets (and some great Phillies moments, too).
Attention, Harper
Monday’s matchup, the first of the week, was pretty standard…for two at-bats.
Then, Harper stepped up to the plate. After a strike on the first pitch, Mets catcher Tomás Nido attempted to throw the ball back to Sean Manaea on the mound. The key phrase in that previous sentence was “tried.”
Instead, Nido hit Harper on the side of the head. Fortunately he only grazed the helmet.
I never submitted an idea for Ricky Bo’s Phillies pregame live segment “What’s He Doing?” …but this has to make the cut for the next one, right?
Deja vu
What’s wilder than the Mets hitting Alec Bohm with the bases loaded? The Mets hit Bohm with the bases loaded in two straight games. Seriously, it’s funny.
It was the third and fourth time Bohm was hit by a pitch this season with the bases loaded. That ties him with Jimmy Rollins for second place (4) in franchise history during the regular season. Chase Utley remains in first place with five.
The reaction of Bohm and the rest of the bench was priceless. All smiles, all laughing, all thanks to Mets Metting.
nasty noses
In addition to all the crazy moments throughout the week, we also got to see some really good baseball.
Aaron Nola threw a gem Tuesday afternoon at Citi Field. A complete game shutout, to be exact. He was perfect for the first five innings of the game, and although Nola noted after the win that “there was a lot of baseball left,” he didn’t go unnoticed by everyone watching.
The 4-0 victory marked the sixth complete game of his career and the fourth shutout of his career.
Amy Fadool and Ricky Bottalico discuss Aaron Nola’s complete-game shutout against the Mets on Tuesday afternoon.
In his career, Nola is 10-8 against the Mets with a 3.21 ERA and 198 strikeouts in his 27 appearances.
The starting rotation remains one of the biggest starting success stories in MLB this season.
“We know how important the bullpen is to get to the postseason because they throw a lot and they have to be fresh,” Nola said Tuesday. “We want to put it on our backs throughout the season to rack up those innings and we have five guys that can do that.”
Nice place for a nap (?)
There’s nothing like paying to see the Mets and how they play so poorly that it’s more appealing to watch from the back of your eyelids. (For the record, I have never paid to see the Mets play. Who would want to do that?)
While Nola was busy, a Mets fan was enjoying the beautiful weather by taking a nap. You may become the deepest sleeper ever.
A sleeping Snorlax in the middle of a road couldn’t compare to this fan.
Upside down glasses. Hat turned inside out. Piling things on top of his head. Other fans take selfies with him. It’s the next level.
But hey, we’ll let the title of that video speak for itself.
Too sexy stotty
Bryson Stott has been the Phillies’ best hitter in the month of May and was on full display against the Mets.
In 17 plate appearances across the two series, Stott had four hits, five RBIs, five walks and one home run while hitting .400/.588/.700.
Last week, Stott was tied with the Pirates’ Yasmani Grandal for first in MLB in runs batted in (9), led the league in walks (8) and tied for second in stolen bases (4). Here’s the icing on the cake for that stretch…zero strikeouts. Not one.
Great, damn Stott.
