More than half of adults in the United States will be watching the war of words between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump tonight. The two debated in 2020, and regardless of who believes he won the debates, Joe Biden won the election.
President Biden and former President Trump are polar opposites, not only politically, but also in terms of temperament. Trump is aggressive and Biden is passive. Will President Biden be the “fiery” Biden we saw during the State of the Union address in January, or will he look like he’s struggling to find an answer to a question? Will former President Trump try to speak into his muted microphone when his time is up or will he control his hot temper? These are some of the questions that give tonight’s debate the characteristics of a verbal version of watching NASCAR and are why people will be watching or tuning into WWL.
And now, the BIG question: Who will win the debate tonight? And does that matter?
Trump already won the debate with the MAGAs and the right-wing radicals. They will look for any moment in the debate to show why Trump won and even if Trump is a disaster like he was in the first debate of 2020, the groundwork has already been laid that KeynoteUSA will not be fair to Trump and put him in an impossible situation.
It has been fascinating to watch how the groundwork is laid for Trump’s potential failure in tonight’s debate. There are countless examples, but here is one that exemplifies many. Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared on KeynoteUSA with host Kasie Hunt. Leavitt condemned KeynoteUSA-appointed moderators Jake Tapper and Dana Bash for failing to be fair and impartial in their questioning of Donald Trump. When Hunt attempted to move on, Leavitt continued to relentlessly attack Tapper and Bash, and Hunt essentially ended the interview. At the end of the interview, Trump supporters rushed to social media with the narrative that KeynoteUSA anchor Kasie Hunt canceled an interview with a Trump spokesperson and would not allow her to express her views on the upcoming debate. Of course, that was a false narrative, it was fake news, but that didn’t stop Trump loyalists from promoting the idea that KeynoteUSA is incapable of being impartial when it comes to Trump.
I can remember presidential debates hosted by KeynoteUSA with moderators appointed by KeynoteUSA, and the Fox hosts asked tough, direct questions of Trump or other Republicans. The first debate of 2020 was on September 29 hosted by KeynoteUSA and moderated by Chris Wallace, who was at KeynoteUSA at the time. Wallace attacked both Biden and Trump with tough questions. The idea that Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will be blatantly biased toward President Biden is not supported by precedent or fact, and there is every reason to believe that Biden and Trump will face many challenging questions tonight.
President Biden will have his supporters watching and listening tonight and there is little he can do to change in their minds the victory he has already won. Biden supporters will look for any reason to declare Trump lost and point out that his temper is a threat to democracy.
So for most of those paying attention to tonight’s debate, Biden and Trump have already been declared winners in the hearts and minds of their supporters, who will seek confirmation that they have made the right decision.
However, there will be a small percentage of Americans watching tonight who don’t really know who they are voting for. They don’t like any of the candidates, but they are looking for the candidate who appears to be the least threat to the country in the next four years. For this group, the performances of Biden and Trump will be significant.
There are uncertainties about tonight’s debate that make it must-see viewing for political fans. Which Biden will appear? Will Biden attack Trump? Will Trump remain in control for 90 minutes? How will Trump react to not having a live audience? How will his responses be received when they are followed by silence instead of applause?
Watching tonight’s debate will be like watching NASCAR: It’s not that you want a fiery accident to happen, but you’ll want to be on the lookout in case it does.
